Inside a research laboratory on the UConn Health campus in Farmington, technicians spend their days processing small vials of blood drawn from volunteers, many of them older adults with no outward signs of cognitive decline. The goal of the work is ambitious: to identify Alzheimer's disease years before a patient or their family would notice the first troubling signs of memory loss.
The research builds on a growing body of national science around blood-based biomarkers, proteins and other molecules that can signal changes in the brain long before symptoms emerge. For families across Connecticut who have watched relatives struggle with dementia, the prospect of an earlier diagnosis carries real weight, potentially opening a window for treatment or lifestyle changes that could slow the disease's progression.
Building a Connecticut-Based Patient Cohort
Recruiting volunteers has been central to the project. Researchers have worked with senior centers, primary care practices, and memory clinics across the Hartford area to enroll participants willing to provide blood samples and undergo periodic cognitive testing over several years. A research coordinator involved in the study said the team has focused on building a participant pool that reflects the state's diversity, including efforts to recruit from communities that have historically been underrepresented in dementia research.
"We know that risk factors and access to care aren't distributed evenly," the coordinator said. "If the findings are going to be useful for the whole state, the study population needs to look like Connecticut, not just the patients who happen to live near a research hospital."
Participants return periodically for follow-up visits, during which researchers track subtle changes in memory and processing speed alongside the biomarker data. The longitudinal design is intended to help scientists understand not just whether a given marker is present, but how it changes over time as the disease potentially develops.
What Earlier Detection Could Mean for Families
Alzheimer's disease remains difficult to diagnose definitively without invasive or expensive testing, such as spinal taps or specialized brain imaging, options that are not practical for widespread screening. A blood test that could flag elevated risk during a routine checkup would represent a significant shift in how primary care physicians approach cognitive health, potentially allowing earlier referrals to specialists and clinical trials.
Researchers caution that the science remains in relatively early stages, and any blood test to emerge from work like this would need extensive validation before it could be used broadly in clinical settings. Still, the potential implications have drawn interest from geriatric care providers across the state, some of whom see earlier detection as a way to help families plan for care needs, financial decisions, and safety concerns well before a crisis point.
Connecting Research to Everyday Care
The project has also become a training ground for medical students and graduate researchers at UConn, who assist with sample processing and participant follow-up. Faculty involved in the work say the collaboration between the research lab and community clinics has helped bridge a gap that often separates academic science from the primary care offices where most patients are actually seen.
For now, the study continues to enroll volunteers, with organizers hoping to expand recruitment to additional counties over the coming year. Family members of participants describe a mix of anxiety and hope in taking part, aware that any findings are still years from changing standard practice, but grateful for the chance to contribute to research that could eventually help identify the disease earlier in people they love.
